This page is used to document device compatibility and recommendations. Your custom router will require two main components: a device to run the MassMesh firmware and a radio so that you can connect with other nodes.
Contents
Mesh Node Devices
These are devices that can run the meshing protocol. Once they have the MassMesh firmware flashed, these devices provide access to the mesh via wifi and/or ethernet depending on the device. They will also handle automatically discovering and connecting to nearby nodes.
Recommended Devices
These are devices that are known to work well with meshing software.
Brand | Model | Yggdrasil Speed | Mesh Exit Capable | Built-in Wifi | Outdoor | Year | MSRP | Used Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Raspberry Pi Foundation | Raspberry Pi 4 Model B | 450 Mbit/s | No3 | Yes | No2 | 2019 | $35.00 | ? |
PC Engines | APU2 | 950 Mbit/s | Yes | No1 | No2 | 2016 | $115.00 | ? |
1 USB and 2 mini-pcie interfaces available to add one or more wifi interfaces
2 Possible with outdoor case
3 Possible with additional adapters
Work in Progress Devices
These are devices that don't currently work with the MassMesh firmware, but are being evaluated and worked on for added support. If you are looking to host a node, we do not recommend that you buy one of these, as it's not guaranteed that they will work in the mesh.
If you would like to assist with adding device support, check in with the tech team on the status of these devices and what you can do to help.

Xiaomi | Mi Router 3 | ? | Yes | Yes | No | ? | $39.99 |
1 USB and mini-pcie interfaces available to add a wifi interface
Mesh Radio Devices
These are radio devices that we can use to provide mesh node devices with connectivity to other mesh nodes.
Recommended Devices
These are devices that are known to work well with meshing software.
Brand | Model | Usecase | Outdoor | Year | MSRP | Used Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Ubiquiti | NanoStation 5AC Loco | Mesh Radio | Yes | ? | $49.00 | ? |
Ubiquiti | UAP AC Mesh | Mesh Radio | Yes | 2016 | $99.00 | ? |
Point to Point Devices
These are devices that provide direct links between 2 locations. They usually use directional antennas to allow long range links. These radios can augment a mesh node by bridging longer distances that omni-directional radios might not reach. Because these links are planned at both ends, there is no need for the flexibility of custom firmware. Simply configure the devices with matching settings and provide line-of-sight between them.
Brand | Model | Outdoor | Year | MSRP |
---|---|---|---|---|
Ubiquiti | LiteBeam 5AC Gen2 | Yes | ? | ? |
Ubiquiti | NanoBeam 5AC 16 | Yes | ? | ? |
